Honouring the Life of Heather May Ann Garratt:
Remembering her Legacy to the Métis Community

Heather May Ann Garratt (August 27th, 1958 - January 2nd, 2026)

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) mourns the passing of Heather May Ann Garratt, a respected Métis leader, devoted family member, and cherished community builder.

Heather was raised on the shores of Georgian Bay and spent her early years at the family cottage on Little Beausoleil Island—a place that remained central to her life and Métis roots. She lived a full and meaningful life as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, business owner, and dedicated Métis leader. Heather will be remembered for her strong commitment to community, her pride in hard work and service, and above all, for her warm smile and sense of humour.

Heather is the beloved wife of Greg Garratt, PCMNO Councillor for the Historic Georgian Bay Métis Community. She is the mother of daughters Michelle Forget and Laurie Barrantes, and the proud grandmother of Julio Barrantes Forget, Juan Barrantes Forget, Rico Barrantes Forget, Luca Barrantes Forget, and Marco Barrantes Forget. She was also a stepmother to Michael and Kenneth Garratt.

Heather traced her Métis ancestry to families who migrated from Drummond Island in 1828, with roots in the Labatte and Laramie-Cloutier family lines. She dedicated 16 years—nearly a quarter of her life—to leadership and community building with the Georgian Bay Métis Council, including six years as Treasurer and later serving as Councillor at Large.

Through her leadership, Heather played a key role in revitalizing the annual Georgian Bay Métis Rendezvous, helping restore an important gathering that continues to reconnect families and strengthen community ties. She was also deeply involved in organizing community events, preparing traditional Métis foods, and supporting the preservation of Métis culture, traditions, and heritage.

In addition to her community leadership, Heather was an entrepreneur in the hospitality and dining industry. She owned and operated several small businesses, including an in-home bakery and a family dining restaurant proudly bearing her family name.

Heather was predeceased by her siblings Patricia, Mary, and Robert. She is survived by her siblings Nadine, William, and Linda.

Heather leaves behind a lasting legacy through the relationships she built, the traditions she helped preserve, and the community she served with dedication and heart. Her contributions will not be forgotten.

The Métis Nation of Ontario extends its sincere condolences to Heather’s family, friends, and the Georgian Bay Métis community during this time of loss.
