Solar power shines in Fort Frances and Sault Ste. Marie
Two Métis communities in Ontario are taking another step toward sustainability. New solar installations are now helping power MNO office buildings. The Sunset Country Métis Council buildings in Fort Frances and three buildings on John Street in Sault Ste. Marie, supporting cleaner energy use and long-term sustainability.
Part of the broader MNO Solar Panel Program, the initiative brings renewable energy to both citizens’ homes and MNO-owned buildings where installation is possible.
The new grid-tied solar systems use net metering to send excess energy back to the provincial grid during peak sunlight hours and draw power when needed, providing reliable energy without the need for costly battery systems.
“Seeing solar power installed at the Sunset Country Métis Council Fort Frances office and hall is an exciting step forward for the community,” says Northwestern Ontario Métis Community PCMNO Councillor Theresa Stenlund. “This project reflects our commitment to protecting the environment while investing in sustainable solutions that will benefit future generations of Métis citizens.”
“The solar installations in Sault Ste. Marie are a meaningful example of how our communities can lead by example in environmental stewardship,” says Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community PCMNO Councillor Mitch Case. “By embracing renewable energy, we’re creating more sustainable community spaces and contributing to a cleaner future for Ontario.”
