Métis Experience in Residential Schools Research Project – Information Booth at the AGA

A 2012 report by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada stated that Métis experiences in residential schools have been largely overlooked, and that many stories remain untold. The Métis Experience in Residential Schools Research Project (MERSRP), led by the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO), seeks to help fill that gap through a process grounded in Métis ways of knowing and community engagement.

 

The project team will host learning sessions to introduce the project and share ways to get involved. These sessions are open to all citizens, including those directly connected to the legacy of residential schools and those who wish to support survivors. Session dates will be announced on the project website, MERSRP.ca.

 

The project team will also attend the MNO Annual General Assembly (AGA) in Toronto from August 13 to 16, 2026. MNO citizens can visit the Rights, Research and Policy Branch booth to learn more about the project and ways to participate. Project team members will also be available to collect information and arrange future interviews.

 

Interviews will take place over the coming months with individuals who have lived experience or intergenerational knowledge of Métis experiences in residential, day, or industrial schools across Canada. The project team also welcomes those who may have knowledge of Métis experiences in other institutions connected to assimilation policies and practices, as well as those willing to share archival materials.
