Supporting Métis Harvesting and Culture

The Métis harvest is about far more than sustenance—it is a profound expression of Métis rights and an enduring link between generations, communities, and the lands and waters of our ancestors. Through harvesting, Métis families access food and medicines, pass down traditional knowledge, and maintain their relationships with the waters, animals, and ecosystems.

About the Role

The South West Region (Region 9) Captain of the Hunt Liaison (COTHL) will work closely with the MNO Councils in their area and will serve as a crucial point of communication between the Region’s harvesters and the Captains of the Hunt in their respective Traditional Harvesting Territories. This role involves organizing land-based learning opportunities and promoting harvesting traditions for citizens of all ages. As South West Region (Region 9) is not a rights-bearing area this position is that of a liaison for diaspora Métis who live in the region but hold rights in their traditional harvest territories.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Hosting workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and presentations on traditional harvesting skills.
  • Assisting citizens with Harvester Card applications and training.
  • Providing guidance on harvesting rights and the MNO Harvesting Policy.
  • Sharing knowledge related to the Métis Way of Life Framework and Traditional Knowledge studies.
  • Supporting cultural and land-based initiatives throughout the Region.

Who Should Apply?

Applicants must be active MNO Harvesters in good standing, have strong knowledge of Métis traditional harvesting practices, and be deeply involved in their local community. Experience in leadership, education, or land-based knowledge sharing is a strong asset.

Applications must include the following:

  • Proof of MNO citizenship;
  • A resume highlighting your experience, leadership, traditional knowledge, and community involvement;
  • A cover letter (maximum 600 words) indicating your interest in the Region 9 COTHL role and your qualifications for the role.
