Métis Nation of Ontario Attends the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens’ Gathering in Alberta
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) attended the 97th annual Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens’ Gathering hosted at Métis Crossing in late August.
Mitch Case, Provisional Council of the MNO representative for Huron-Superior Métis Community, Mitch Case, brought greetings to the Citizens Gathering on behalf of the MNO. “For 97 years, the Métis in Alberta have come together and have been the stalwart leaders of movement for Métis rights and self-government in this country.”
Mitch Case’s participation in the gathering underscores the deep ties between Métis governments across the Homeland, and the shared commitment to advancing Métis self-government, rights, and Nationhood.”Coming to Alberta has always been the highlight of this job—I can’t get across the room to get coffee without running into countless friends and family who want to visit,” said Case. “You’ll never meet a friendlier group of people than the Métis from Alberta.”
The Citizens’ Gathering reflects ongoing progress in the implementation of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s self-government agreement with Canada, signed in 2023. The MNO, which signed its own Métis Government Recognition and Self-Government Agreement in 2019, continues to work alongside sister governments like Alberta’s in pushing forward on self-determination and the recognition of Métis governance.
“The leadership and courage shown by Alberta Métis for nearly a century have laid the foundation that all of us now build upon. Our successes as Métis governments are shared successes—rooted in our collected history, family connections, and the unbreakable spirit of our people.”
The MNO congratulates the Citizens of Alberta for 97 years of gathering and a sincere thanks for the warm welcome extended to us.
