Métis Nation of Ontario Launches Health Programs for Its Citizens Across Ontario Federal investment in health and wellbeing of Métis families - supports new initiatives to improve care

OCTOBER 9 – OTTAWA — The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) has launched two new health programs as part of its growing self-government capacity. Funded by the Government of Canada’s Indigenous Health Equity Fund*, the Health Resources Project and the Virtual Health Care Program are now available to Métis citizens in Ontario, providing direct support in areas where access to care and coverage gaps remain.

These new programs respond directly to findings from the MNO’s “Community Report: What We Heard: 2024 Health Survey”, in which thousands of citizens identified priority gaps in care. Citizens reported challenges accessing dental care, prescription medications, and primary care services, often due to cost, long wait times, or lack of coverage. Forty-three per cent of respondents reported avoiding dental treatment due to cost, and 76 per cent reported delays accessing care, including long waits to see a family doctor. Many also expressed a desire for more accessible, Métis-specific services such as extended benefits and virtual care options.

“These programs reflect what self-government means in action. As a Métis government with the authority and responsibility to act in the best interests of our Citizens” said Sharon Cadeau, Acting Provincial Secretary for Health, Wellbeing, and Seniors, “We are using this investment to improve access to health care. Through these new programs, we’re delivering real, measurable support for Métis families in Ontario.”

The Health Resources Project offers up to $1,250 per citizen based on available funding to help cover eligible health expenses not fully covered by other benefits. This includes supports such as dental care, hearing aids, vision care, diagnostic testing, medications, vaccines, and assistive devices. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and provide documentation confirming other health benefits have been exhausted.

The Virtual Health Care Program provides citizens with free online consultations with a licensed Physician Assistant for non-emergency medical concerns. Services include prescription renewals, treatment for minor illnesses, specialist referrals, and mental health referrals.
