Youth Camp Weekend Brings Culture, Creativity, and Connection to Barrie
From May 30 to June 1, Métis youth and their families gathered in Barrie for a fun-filled and culturally rich Youth Camp Weekend hosted by the Barrie-South Simcoe Métis Council. The event brought together community members of all ages to learn, create, and connect through hands-on activities and shared experiences.
The camp kicked off Friday evening and continued through Sunday, with Saturday being a highlight packed with interactive workshops and activities. The day began with families gathering in the activity room and outdoor spaces to take part in a wide range of programming.
Youth tried their hands at beading earrings and necklaces, painting wooden antlers, and making candles. They tested their skills at the blow-up archery set and got creative with face painting and tie-dye crafts led by MNO staff.
Inside, participants explored a cultural display featuring Métis artifacts, animal hides, and antlers. Barrie Métis Councillor Samantha Loney also hosted a table dedicated to older youth, sparking great conversations about video production and podcasting.
Outside, Senator Vic Brunelle demonstrated bannock-making over an open fire, drawing a crowd of curious and hungry campers eager to learn (and taste!). Later in the day, several lucky youth took home gift baskets as prizes from the council’s draws. President Froh was even on hand to hand out prizes and congratulate the winners in person.
The weekend was a vibrant celebration of Métis culture, youth creativity, and community connection. Congratulations to the Barrie-South Simcoe Métis Council on a fantastic and inspiring youth camp!
