The Housing Branch has been working towards addressing the gap in housing by creating affordable rentals for Métis citizens and families in regions across the province.

The Capital Projects division has launched two key affordable rental projects in Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto, with Métis citizens moving in starting in the fall of 2023.

Civil works have begun in Midland for 14 future affordable rental homes and plans are underway for a property development in Kenora.

Midland (Region 7)

The majority of civil works were completed in early 2024 for the Midland project, the site for 12 semi-detached and 2 detached affordable housing units that will make a unique Métis housing community in the heart of Midland. The MNO has engaged a Métis-owned Architectural Design firm and a Constructor to implement the Construction of the homes, which is now underway.

Kenora (Region 1)

The Kenora development is currently in the planning process, to allow for a mixed use commercial and residential site of mixed rental units. The community and local authorities are pleased that the MNO are following processes to ensure the project meets the needs of the community at large. More to come…as this project is in the early initiation phases.

Frequently Asked Questions

The timeline for new housing developments depends on the completion of housing needs assessments and reviews of potential locations. The MNO considers factors like access to transit, key resources (community centers, doctors, support services), and projected capital costs.

Locations are selected based on the 2021 Housing Needs Assessment, the MNO Household Survey, administrative program data, and regional housing and census data. The MNO prioritizes Kenora, Midland, Sault Ste. Marie, and the Greater Toronto Area for increasing affordable housing for Métis citizens.

Priority is given to Métis citizens who can afford the rent, with additional priority for those fleeing domestic violence, families with no security of tenure, or families in the process of reunification. The leaseholder must be a Métis citizen.

This varies on a case-by-case basis. The MNO strives to offer accessibility or visitability in all new projects. Inquiries about specific properties should be directed to IPS.
