A Gathering of Family Voices
The Family Voices Gathering included a sharing circle, a delicious selection of Indigenous foods, as well as displays of artwork and beadwork, presented by Métis artisan Kathy Morgan. Citizens opened up about what the MNO has meant to them as Métis people; sharing laughter, memories and even a few tears.
“For me, the most memorable aspect was hearing all the different stories and how passionate everyone is about their heritage,” says Métis Family Wellbeing Coordinator, Gabrielle Dufour who coordinated the Toronto event. “Being able to hear different perspectives and have people share knowledge was a major highlight.”
Also attending the gathering were MNO leadership including Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO) Region 8 Councilor Kate Stewart-McNeil, Honourary MNO Senator Joe Poitras, and MNO Woman’s Council Region 8 Rep Luanne Cunningham.
“[Event like this] gives an opportunity to engage with new and old friends and community members,” comments Gabrielle. “This is a great opportunity for the MNO citizens to give voice to their stories of the last 30 years of the MNO and the 20 years since the Powley decision. It is important to have events like this, as they really highlight the positive changes the last decades.”
The MNO extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the organizers and participants for making this event a memorable and enriching experience for everyone. Marsii!
About Family Voices
The MNO is currently compiling a collection of stories directly from citizens for a special project called “Family Voices”. All citizens are invited to share their stories and help commemorate and reflect on the remarkable success of the MNO over the past 30 years, and celebrate the profound impact of the landmark Métis rights case R v. Powley.
