National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, Ottawa
On November 8, Aboriginal Veterans Day, a special ceremony will be held in Ottawa to honour two of our Métis veterans for their contributions during the Second World War.
WWII Métis veterans George Ricard and Guy Lafreniere will be presented an award of $20,000 from the Métis World War II Recognition Legacy Fund. This Fund was established as a gesture of reconciliation to Métis veterans of World War II following the federal government’s formal acknowledgement in September of the neglect and mistreatment Métis veterans historically experienced post-war.
Métis Nation of Ontario President Margaret Froh and Métis Nation of Ontario Veteran’s Council (MNOVC) President Brian Black will be in attendance with representatives from the Government of Canada and Métis National Council to honour these gallant warriors.
Date: Friday, November 8, 2019
