Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is thrilled to announce that Kim Powley, a dedicated leader and true pillar of our community, has been named the 2024 Volunteer of the Year. With over 20 years of service, Kim has been at the heart of the Historic Sault Ste. Marie Métis Council, where she spent 18 of those years as President. Her impact stretches beyond her local community, influencing initiatives across the Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community (Region) 4 and the entire MNO.

Kim’s work goes beyond titles and recognition—her dedication has always been about bettering her community and preserving Métis culture. One of her major contributions is the development of the Sault Métis Heritage Centre, the first of its kind in Ontario.

Kim’s hands-on leadership is evident in everything she does. Whether it’s writing grant proposals, staying late to clean up after events or through her work on the MNO Self Government Commission in 2016, where she played a key role in advancing the MNO’s self-governance efforts.

Kim values the input of her council members and is known for acknowledging better ideas when presented, leading by example and fostering a sense of belonging within her team. Her colleagues and those she serves describe her as tireless, inclusive, and deeply caring.

One of her nominators shared, “Kim is usually the first to arrive and the last to leave any event. Kim attends funerals, birthday parties, and other family celebrations. I believe she feels a connection with them and wants to be there to support them in any way she can.” Another highlighted her personal touch, recalling how Kim guided them to vital resources and checked in regularly during a family health crisis.

Kim’s legacy of selflessness and leadership continues to inspire those around her. As she prepares to pass the reins of leadership, she remains a steadfast example of what it means to serve with compassion and dedication.

Congratulations, Kim Powley, for your continued commitment to the community and for this well-deserved recognition!
