Explore Métis Cultural Fire and Home Safety

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) invites citizens and community members to join a special virtual learning session, Weaving of Ember, Flame & Ways of Knowing: Métis Cultural Fire with FireSmart Home Safety, on July 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This discussion will bring together traditional Métis knowledge and modern fire safety practices through the perspectives of Cultural Knowledge Holder & Fire Keeper Steve Gjos and Cultural Knowledge Holder & Fire Practitioner David Hamilton.

Fire has long held cultural, ecological, and practical significance for Métis people. Throughout history, fire has been used to shape landscapes, support healthy ecosystems, and strengthen connections between communities and the land. During this session, Steve Gjos will share teachings on the cultural significance of fire and its role on the landscape from a Métis perspective.

Building on these teachings, David Hamilton will explore how traditional knowledge can be woven together with contemporary FireSmart principles. Participants will learn practical steps they can take to help protect their homes, camps, cottages, and surrounding properties from fire risks while fostering a deeper understanding of fire’s role in the environment.

As wildfires continue to affect communities across Canada, understanding both the cultural and practical dimensions of fire has never been more important. This session offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced knowledge keepers and practitioners while gaining valuable information that can help create safer, more resilient communities.
