Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Niagara Region Métis Council (NRMC) President Derrick Pont was recognized by the Town of Lincoln at the annual Good Citizen Awards on April 20.

Every year the Town of Lincoln honours local volunteers who go above and beyond to make their community a better place. Community members nominate the recipients, who are recognized at the Mayor and Council Volunteer Recognition Celebration during National Volunteer Week.

President Pont, a Town of Lincoln resident for more than 30 years, was acknowledged for the work he does as MNO NRMC president, a Region 9 consultation committee member, and the Métis representative on the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority Community Liaison Advisory Committee.

President Pont joined the MNO NRMC in 2008 and quickly became the council chair. He is currently in his second term as president and sits on many committees to support the needs of and advocate for MNO citizens in the Niagara Region.

During the recognition celebration, Town of Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton thanked President Pont and the community council for providing resources and support for last year’s Louis Riel Day ceremony. She also said the town will raise the Métis flag for Louis Riel Day again in 2018.
