Stories and storytelling are a source of power and pride for Métis people. Through stories, traditional knowledge is passed down through the generations, imaginations are sparked, and culture is celebrated.
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Thames Bluewater Métis Council (TBWMC) has established a library that will highlight Métis literature as well as other Indigenous materials. The library will serve to educate, raise awareness and encourage connections within the community.
TBWMC Youth Representative Kaitlyn Anderson-Mitchell spearheaded the library project, which she believes will perform an important service to both Métis and non-Indigenous patrons.
“I’m excited that our community will finally have a library they can go to where every single book will make them feel honoured and represented,” says Kaitlyn. “Métis books can be difficult to find in mainstream bookshops and libraries that often we come to believe that they simply do not exist. But this is not true. Métis people have produced some of the best works of fiction and scholarly research. I hope that this library will feel like home for Métis that now reside in this urban community, and that it will inspire the next generation of Métis artists and scholars.”
The TBWMC Métis Library currently features over 100 books in its collection; ranging from history and politics to finger-weaving. It also includes a selection of fiction for children and teens. Many of the titles were donated by the local community and the Council. Other books were sourced and purchased with TBWMC funds.
Citizens and community members are invited to attend the Grand Opening on Saturday, August 22 from 6PM to 8PM, and will have the opportunity to sign up for a library card and check out books. Library cards are free for MNO citizens, students and educators, with proper identification (citizenship card, student card, staff card). Other memberships are available for $20 for a two-year library card. All fees will be put back into the library to obtain additional books and supplies.

There is a large grassed area with a gazebo in the parking lot area – kids are welcome!
COVID-19 precautions will be adhered to during this event, including physical distancing.
Snacks and drinks will be provided.
