Indigenous Veterans Day

Today, on Indigenous Veterans Day, we honour the courage and sacrifices of Métis, First Nations, and Inuit veterans who have served to protect our rights, freedoms, and way of life.

From the War of 1812 through both World Wars, the Korean Conflict, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and peacekeeping missions, Indigenous peoples have steadfastly defended this land. Métis people have long shown a proud legacy of military service, standing strong at home and abroad.

For Métis, this day is a sacred reminder of our shared history and the strength of our people. Our democracies are built on the dedication, resilience, and sacrifice of these individuals. As we strive toward reconciliation, we recognize their service and the challenges they have faced, to foster greater understanding, healing, and unity.

We also acknowledge that their service extended beyond the battlefield. Many Indigenous veterans have continued to defend their communities and values through advocacy, mentorship, and their commitment to a just society. These veterans embody resilience and pride, showing future generations how dedication to justice builds a better future for all.

On this day, and every day we extend our deepest gratitude to Indigenous veterans past and present. To Métis Nation of Ontario citizens who have served, we thank you for your courage and dedication.

Marsii.

If you are a Métis Nation of Ontario citizen and a veteran, we encourage you to connect with the Métis Nation of Ontario’s Veterans’ Council at mnovc@metisnation.org, so we may continue to support and honour your contributions.

Please take a moment to pause and reflect on November 8th and 11th to Honour and Remember our Veterans—those who have served, both at home and abroad, past and present. Let us recognize the courage and dedication of our service members who stand ready to protect us all.  – Brian Prairie President MNO Veterans’ Council.”
