Jean Teillet was honoured with a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD) by the Law Society of Upper Canada during the Call to the Bar ceremony in Toronto on June 26, 2015.
Teillet, a great-grandniece of Louis Riel, was lead counsel in the historic R. v. Powley case that affirmed the constitutional protection of Métis harvesting rights.
The honorary LLD is conferred upon individuals in recognition of outstanding achievements in service and benefit to the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice.
In a tweet posted on May 13, Teillet announced she and a colleague will be teaching a course on Métis Law at the University of British Columbia. The course is scheduled to begin in January, 2016.
