Listening and Learning: Citizen Feedback Inspires new MNO Health Initiatives
MNO Launches new Programs Following 2024 Health and Wellness Survey
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is pleased to share the results of its 2024 Health and Wellness Survey, an important resource that provides a deeper understanding of the health status and needs of Métis citizens across the province.
Conducted in May 2024, the survey gathered insights from thousands of participants, offering a comprehensive look at physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. While most respondents described their health as good, many identified barriers to accessing the care and supports they need. Long wait times, limited availability of specialized services, and high costs continue to make it difficult for many citizens to maintain or improve their health.
“The findings from this report are invaluable,” says Sharon Cadeau, MNO Acting Provincial Secretary for Health. “They help us understand the current state of Métis health and guide how we prioritize programs and align them with funding opportunities to better serve our citizens.”
The survey found that 40 per cent of Métis citizens consider cost a significant barrier to dental care, often leading to more serious and expensive health issues. Participants also cited inadequate coverage for medical, dental, vision, and long-term care, along with gaps in existing MNO health programs.
Thanks to the responses from Métis citizens, the MNO has used these findings to create two new initiatives—the Health Resources Project and the Virtual Care Program—funded by the Government of Canada through the Indigenous Health Equity Fund. Together, these programs are designed to improve access to care and close coverage gaps for Métis citizens across Ontario.
The Health Resources Project helps cover expenses for essential medical services, including dental, hearing, and vision care; diagnostic testing; medications; vaccines; and assistive devices.
The Virtual Care Program ensures that all Métis citizens can access timely healthcare, offering virtual consultations, follow-up care, and personalized treatment options—no matter where they live in Ontario.
“Together, we’re ensuring that Métis voices are heard and that access to healthcare is a right for every citizen,” adds Cadeau.
The MNO extends its sincere gratitude to all those who contributed to this vital research. Your feedback continues to strengthen the foundation of Métis health and well-being across our communities.
