FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – August 8, 2025
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) has concluded a successful Métis Summit in Ottawa after productive discussions with fellow Métis leaders, Prime Minister Carney and senior federal officials about the implementation of the One Canadian Economy Act.
The Summit marked a significant opportunity to advance economic reconciliation and ensure that perspectives of Métis governments are reflected in nation-building projects.
President Froh, who led MNO’s delegation, was encouraged by the Prime Minister’s acknowledgement that Métis communities have historically been excluded from major economic decisions, despite having played an essential role building Canada’s first economy and original trade networks.
“The Métis people have always been resilient and resourceful, playing a vital role in Canada’s story,” said President Froh. “The MNO appreciates the Prime Minister acknowledging this and recognizing that the duty to consult includes Métis people. We have a proud history of contributing to the economy and our Métis Citizens are ready to contribute to Canada’s economic future.”
Key themes and outcomes from the Summit included a joint commitment to Métis inclusion in the implementation of the One Canadian Economy Act, the importance of distinctions-based funding and engagement approaches for Métis governments, and enhanced collaboration on infrastructure and resource development opportunities with Métis leadership at the table.
During the Summit, President Froh emphasized the MNO’s long-standing leadership in project consultation and accommodation, and the need for strong Métis representation in federal policy related to infrastructure, regional development, and economic growth. This built off the Prime Minister’s comments where he spoke about the importance of consultation with Indigenous peoples, not just during the process of determining what projects are of national interest, but throughout the development of the selected projects.
“As the MNO’s relationship with Canada continues to grow, we remain hopeful about what we can achieve together,” said President Froh. “We came to the Summit today to ensure that Métis voices, priorities, and perspectives help shape the path forward for all Canadians. We leave with a commitment to continue this important work with Canada, so our Métis Citizens can have a bright, prosperous future ahead.”
