Ottawa (February 17, 2022) — Today, Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) President Margaret Froh met with The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations. The meeting was an opportunity to foster the government-to-government relationship between the MNO and Canada and to discuss a number of items of importance.

Among topics discussed were the importance of Canada’s ongoing support as Métis communities and citizens recover from COVID-19, the tabling of Federal Recognition Legislation to give legal effect to Canada’s commitments in the Métis Government Recognition and Self-Government Agreements, Canada’s commitment to addressing the outstanding claims against the Crown of Métis communities represented by the MNO, and the desire of Métis National Council (MNC) Governing Members for a National Métis Claims Policy.

President Froh also took the opportunity to remind Minister Miller that Ontario is the home of the landmark Métis rights decision in R. v. Powley, and discussed the importance and significance of Powley, not only for Ontario Métis, but for Métis communities throughout Métis Nation Homeland.

“I was happy to meet with Minister Miller today and look forward to continuing to foster our government-to-government relationship,” said Froh. “He committed to the priorities that will support the MNO’s continuing journey to self-government, recognized the importance of addressing outstanding claims, and pledged Canada’s ongoing support as the Métis Nation recovers from COVID-19. I thank Minister Miller for his time and commitment to truth and reconciliation with Métis citizens within Ontario.”
