MNO Announces 10-Year Housing and Homelessness Action Plan

Toronto – March 6, 2025 – The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is proud to announce the release of its comprehensive 2024-2034 Housing and Homelessness Action Plan, which outlines a strategy to address the pressing housing needs of Métis citizens across the province. The 10-year plan is designed to combat homelessness, prevent housing instability, and create long-term housing solutions, aiming to provide a safe, affordable, and culturally enriching place to live for Métis families.
The Action Plan was announced during the first-ever MNO Housing & Homelessness Conference in Toronto, attended by leadership and staff from across the province. Suzanne Brunelle, Senator for Toronto & York Region Métis Council; Greg Garratt, PCMNO Councillor for Region 7 and MNO Associate Provincial Secretary for Housing & Infrastructure; Sharon Cadeau, PCMNO Interim Chair and MNO Provincial Secretary of Housing; and Margaret Froh, President of the MNO were joined on stage by MP Peter Fragiskatos, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities to offer opening remarks at this momentous event.
The Action Plan was developed with input from over 900 Métis citizens and incorporated findings from the MNO Housing Census, which surveyed more than 8,000 Citizen households. The Action Plan focuses on six strategic areas: preventing homelessness, increasing access to affordable housing, supporting homeownership, building sustainable partnerships, improving data collection for accountability, and helping Métis households buy their own homes.
“This plan is a significant step forward in ensuring that every Métis citizen in Ontario has access to a home that is not only safe and affordable but also reflects our culture and values,” said President Froh.
Sharon Cadeau, MNO Provincial Secretary for Housing and Infrastructure, remarked “With the support of our partners and the ongoing input from our citizens, we are committed to transforming the housing landscape for Métis communities across the province.”
“Reconciliation is about undoing unspeakable historic wrongs,” says MP Peter Fragiskatos, “Housing can be a fundamental part of that response. Through its work and advocacy, the Métis Nation of Ontario has been able to secure some fundamental support from the federal government, but there is more work to do. I encourage the MNO to continue advocating for and pursuing Indigenous-led approaches that prioritize the wellbeing of Métis peoples.”
The plan addresses the diverse and unique challenges faced by Métis citizens, including specific housing barriers for women, seniors, youth, veterans, and Two-Spirit individuals. The MNO recognizes the historical context of housing instability within Métis communities and aims to provide tailored solutions to meet the varying needs across Ontario’s regions.
