MNO Joins Partners to mark restoration of Nipigon Bay
Métis Nation of Ontario representatives joined federal and local leaders in Nipigon on August 28 for the announcement that Nipigon Bay has officially been removed from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern.
Region 2 PCMNO Councillor Alicia Brink and Thunder Bay Métis Council President Wendy Houston attended the announcement by federal Environment, Climate Change and Nature Minister Julie Dabrusin and Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu. The milestone marks the culmination of nearly four decades of restoration work to improve water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, wetlands, and overall ecosystem health in Nipigon Bay.
Nipigon Bay was designated as an Area of Concern in 1987 because of environmental impacts from industrial and municipal wastewater, development, and debris from past logging activities. Its delisting confirms that the environmental conditions that led to that designation have now been restored.
For MNO citizens and communities in northwestern Ontario, healthy waters, fish, wildlife, and habitats remain important to harvesting, community life, and connections to the land.
The MNO congratulates everyone involved in the decades of work that made the restoration of Nipigon Bay possible and thanks Minister Dabrusin and federal partners for including local MNO leadership in this important announcement.
