MNO News 30: President’s Message (March 2025)
Dear Citizens,
I want to take a moment to look at the progress we’ve made and the road ahead. One of the most significant steps we’ve taken toward self-government is the development of the Statement of Principles.
This draft document is a cornerstone of our work moving forward, and it will be the foundation for our next round of engagement with you, the citizens. Your input is invaluable as we begin to shape our Constitution—this is your government, and it’s important that we build it together.
I would also like to highlight an important milestone: February 24th marked the two-year anniversary of the Métis Government Recognition and Self-Government Implementation Agreement. This agreement, signed in 2023, was a pivotal moment in our history. It affirms our inherent right to self-government and opens the door for greater collaboration with the federal government.
To celebrate, we hosted a special dinner to formally launch the next phase of this initiative. This is a huge step for our government, and I’m proud to stand with you as we continue this important work.
Looking ahead, the consultation process continues. Online seminars on the Statement of Principles will begin on March 19 and will run through the spring. These seminars are crucial as we gather feedback from all of you on how to move forward. I encourage every citizen to participate and share their views.
Another highlight this month is the release of the MNO’s Housing and Homelessness Action Plan. This plan, a result of months of tireless work from our Housing and Infrastructure will serve as our guiding document over the next decade to commit to act on the housing challenges Métis citizens face across the province.
I also want to speak directly to those of you who work in resources and manufacturing. We know that economic challenges, including concerns about tariffs, are top of mind for many of you. The MNO is actively working with all levels of government to address these concerns and ensure that your voices as Métis people are heard. Together, we will navigate these challenges and continue to advocate for the prosperity of our people.
Finally, I want to acknowledge the ongoing trial involving the Métis National Council and the Manitoba Métis Federation. This is about upholding the values of transparency and accountability, principles that are essential for any government.
We are committed to ensuring that these processes are open and that our citizens are kept in the loop on important developments. As this case develops, we will keep you informed with updates as they become available.
Sincerely,
Margaret Froh
President, Métis Nation of Ontario
