The Métis Nation of Ontario’s (MNO) Early Learning & Child Care (ELCC) Winter Kids Camp took place at the beautiful Canadian Ecology Centre from January 30 to February 2. This exciting gathering provided Métis children with the opportunity to embrace the great outdoors, connect with their heritage, and create lasting memories through engaging cultural activities.

From the moment they arrived, young campers found themselves immersed in the beauty of the land and a camp filled with hands-on experiences led by Métis knowledge holders, who taught traditional skills, storytelling, and the importance of Métis culture.

A Weekend of Exploration and Learning

The Winter Kids Camp offered a perfect blend of fun, education, and cultural enrichment. Each day is packed with activities that encourage children to explore, create, and engage with their community:

  • Outdoor Adventures: Campers participated in nature walks, outdoor games, and survival skills workshops tailored to their age groups.
  • Traditional Skills and Crafts: Hands-on activities such as sash weaving, button-making, and cup decorating allowed children to express their creativity while learning about Métis symbols and arts.
  • Cultural Storytelling and Music: Around the fire, campers gathered for storytelling sessions where they heard Métis tales and music.
  • Interactive Family Activities: Families gathered for games, challenges, and a kitchen party, celebrating the sense of community in Métis culture.
Making Memories on the Land

The Canadian Ecology Centre was the perfect setting for Métis youth to experience life on the land while being surrounded by supportive mentors and friends. As the weekend unfolded, children developed new skills and formed new friendships. The ELCC Winter Kids Camp was more than just an event—it was a meaningful experience that fostered pride, resilience, and a celebration of Métis culture.

The Métis Nation of Ontario is grateful to be able to provide opportunities like these for youth, ensuring that traditions are passed down and celebrated for generations to come. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the staff, knowledge holders, and families who made this camp such a success.
