What happened at PCMNO

February 17, 2026 Métis leadership from across Ontario gathered on February 17 for a regular meeting of the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO). From child and family services to infrastructure planning and business development, the afternoon was packed with updates, decisions, and important conversations about how the MNO can continue strengthening governance and supporting Métis citizens and communities.

The meeting opened with a reflection and prayer from Senator Steven Callaghan. President Margaret Froh welcomed everyone and thanked PCMNO members for the care and commitment they bring to the table.

President’s Update

President Froh reflected on Family Day as a reminder that the work of governance is ultimately about supporting Métis families. She congratulated local councils on their recent winter and Family Day gatherings across the province. She also noted that major decisions made in January, including housing projects, the new council funding model, and childcare planning, are now moving into implementation and turning commitments into concrete results for citizens.

Métis Family and Child Project Moving Forward

PCMNO approved the next steps to move forward with the Métis Family Centred Program and to formally request that the MNO be listed as an Indigenous Community under Ontario’s child welfare law.

For years, citizens have said the child welfare system does not always understand Métis culture or connect families to Métis supports. This new program would allow the MNO to play a stronger role when Métis children and youth are involved with child welfare services, including being notified and participating in decisions that affect them.

The program would operate within the MNO, offering centralized intake and local supports across participating Regions. This decision moves the MNO closer to ensuring Métis children grow up safe, supported, and connected to their families, communities, and culture.

Planning for Government Infrastructure

PCMNO received an update from Provincial Secretary Kathleen Anderson on long-term infrastructure planning. Following a competitive process, Colliers was selected to develop a government infrastructure plan for the MNO.

Work is expected to begin in April or May. The review will assess current buildings, systems, and space needs and develop a long-term growth plan to support the MNO as a Métis government. The final plan is expected by the end of December 2026, with PCMNO reviewing it in early 2027.

Ottawa Real Estate Update

PS Anderson also provided an update on work underway to explore the possible purchase of a building in Ottawa.

A firm will be selected to review the MNO’s space needs and identify potential office options. The review will consider operational needs, government relations, and possible revenue opportunities, such as rental space. A report is expected within three to four months.

Supporting Métis Businesses

PCMNO heard about a new project from PS Anderson that is being developed with Chief Strategy Officer Paul Robitaille to support Métis citizens who run businesses.

The project will include learning sessions, coaching, and practical assignments to help business owners understand how to access procurement and contracting opportunities including contracts with all levels of government and with the MNO.

This work complements the strong services offered by the Métis Voyageur Development Fund and recognizes that not all Métis businesses qualify for MVDF programs.

Building a Strong and Consistent MNO Brand

PCMNO approved the development of a refreshed branding plan for the MNO.

This work will focus on greater consistency in how the MNO uses its logo, colours, and key cultural symbols within and across offices and signage. The plan will also explore advancing the development, design, and adoption of an MNO flag to satisfy previous AGA resolutions.

Strengthening Governance Policies

PCMNO approved updated motions on Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest. These updates help ensure sensitive information is handled responsibly and that decisions are made in the best interest of Métis citizens and communities.

Wrap Up

The February 17, 2026, PCMNO meeting focused on building strong systems for the future across child and family services, infrastructure, economic opportunity, and governance. PCMNO continues to take practical steps to strengthen the MNO as a Métis government and ensure its work remains focused on supporting Métis citizens and communities across Ontario.
