Erik was a pillar of the community who exemplified Métis values and he will be deeply missed.

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is deeply saddened by the passing of Erik Gjos.

A proud veteran, loving father, and steadfast Métis leader, Erik was a pillar of the community who exemplified Métis values and represented the urban Métis community in Ottawa with pride.

Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Erik served in the Canadian Armed Forces and, for several years, as President of the Ottawa Métis Council.

Erik was a constant presence at Métis events in the Nation’s Capital, from council rendezvous to flag raisings, always welcoming everyone with open arms. He also served as a member of the MNO Veterans’ Council, advocating for the rights of Indigenous veterans. Rarely was an Indigenous Veterans Day ceremony held without Erik in attendance.

As we honour Erik Gjos, we reflect on the kindness, resilience, and dedication he brought to the Métis Nation and its people. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
