About the album

Throughout The Spaces In Between, Rheaume situates personal experiences alongside the broader context of Métis history, told with leader Tony Belcourt’s acute spoken-word pieces. For “Do About Her,” Belcourt speaks to the lineage of discrimination against Métis: “Well the government never referred to us as Métis, they referred to us as Half Breeds. At one point Métis people were part of the treaties, and they were kicked off because they were half breeds. The discrimination is so entrenched. I don’t know if it will ever go away, but because of this denial, this genocidal attitude of governments, from Sir John A Macdonald and on, and Ontario in particular, governments have never wanted to recognize us.”

As a whole, Rheaume’s fifth album explores complexities of identity, belonging, and the ongoing impacts of the colonial agenda, woven together with the history of the Métis people. From the sweeping thesis of “100 Years” to the personal journey of acceptance that shapes songs such as “All Sides Of Me” and “Supposed To Be,” The Spaces In Between abounds with poignant and pointed moments, grounded in Rheaume’s steadfast country rock sound.

The Spaces In Between was produced by JUNO Award winning Hill Kourkoutis, the first woman to win Recording Engineer of the Year.
