MNO News 34: President’s Message (July 2025)

Dear Citizens,

With summer underway, the Métis Nation of Ontario is focusing on key issues with the federal government, sharing our priorities, and preparing for our 2025 Annual General Assembly.

Canada recently passed the Building Canada Act, a new law meant to speed up how the country builds infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and other major projects. This raises important questions. How will the federal government meet its duty to consult and work with Indigenous peoples when moving projects forward more quickly? While the Act says there will be consultation, it doesn’t clearly explain how that will happen.

As a Métis government recognized by Canada, we are joining other Indigenous governments in calling for our Section 35 rights to be respected as this new law is put into action. We are asking the Government of Canada to work with us to make sure this law brings benefits without putting Indigenous rights at risk.

On June 30, I met with the new Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations, Rebecca Alty. I shared my congratulations on her appointment and expressed my hope for a renewed and more positive relationship with this ministry. I also highlighted that we are the only Métis government representing a community whose Section 35 land-related rights have been recognized by the Supreme Court of Canada. During our meeting, I spoke about the importance of finding a way forward and making real progress in implementing our self-government agreement.

Strengthening our voice with Canada also means staying connected with other Métis governments and communities across the homeland. On June 13 and 14, I travelled to Métis Crossing to participate in the seventh annual Alberta Métis Fest, which welcomed people from all walks of life to enjoy the vibrant spirit of Métis culture and learn more about our rich history and traditions. Gatherings like this show how much we gain when we come together to share culture, knowledge, and support across the homeland.

We’re also celebrating strong leadership at home. Dale LeClair has joined the Métis Nation of Ontario as our new Chief Executive Officer, on July 7, bringing decades of experience in advancing Indigenous priorities across the country.

Here in Ontario, our biggest gathering is just around the corner—and you won’t want to miss it. The 2025 Annual General Assembly, taking place in Sault Ste. Marie is where Métis voices come together to make decisions, share stories, and enjoy good music, good company, and a strong sense of community. Whether it’s voting on resolutions, catching up with friends, or joining in the celebrations, there’s something for everyone. Our government is stronger when Citizens take part. Your voice helps guide the decisions we make together.

This year’s events include the We Aspire Golf Tournament that you can register for or sponsor, as well as Soirée in the Soo, a concert featuring exceptional Métis musicians, with all proceeds supporting the Powley Institute.

Thank you for staying engaged, for showing up, and for helping to shape the future of the Métis Nation of Ontario. I hope to see many of you at the AGA as we continue this important work together.

Sincerely,

Margaret Froh
President, Métis Nation of Ontario
