The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is proud to offer the MNO Justice & Legal Education Bursary Program.

This program is designed to reduce financial barriers and support Ontario Métis learners pursuing law-related studies or training opportunities. The provided financial aid helps cover the costs of tuition, books, travel, and/or student living expenses. This support creates more pathways for Métis students into legal, advocacy, and justice spaces, ensuring greater inclusion of Métis voices into Canada’s legal system.

This program is funded by a grant from The Law Foundation of Ontario’s Access to Justice Fund, as part of its commitments to Truth and Reconciliation and access to justice education for Indigenous students across Canada. The MNO is responsible for managing, administering, and awarding the bursaries.

Note: funding amounts are determined based on level of study and available program funding.

  • Juris Doctor (JD)
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
  • Master of Laws (LLM)
  • Legal Studies
  • Justice Studies
  • Law Clerk
  • Paralegal
  • Gladue Principal training
  • Undergraduate programs being pursued as a pathway to law school

  • Be enrolled in an eligible program of study

Applications must be submitted through the MNO online application portal through the link provided above.

Applicants will generally be required to provide:

The MNO Justice & Legal Education Bursary Program is intended to support Métis learners in the successful completion of their studies.

Recipients are required to notify the MNO if they withdraw from their program, take a leave of absence, or otherwise discontinue their studies after receiving funding.

Failure to complete an eligible program may impact future eligibility for MNO funding programs and may result in a review of the funding provided. The MNO reserves the right to request repayment of funds where a recipient withdraws from their studies, is found to be ineligible, or fails to notify the MNO of changes affecting their eligibility. Each situation will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Recipients are required to notify the MNO of any significant changes to their enrolment status or program of study after receiving funding. Changes will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine whether the recipient remains eligible for the MNO Justice & Legal Education Bursary Program.

Examples of changes that should be reported include:

  • Withdrawing from studies;
  • Changing programs;
  • Transferring to a program that is not eligible under the bursary program; or
  • Taking a leave of absence from studies.

Failure to report changes that affect eligibility may result in repayment of funds

Applicants may withdraw their application at any time prior to funding being issued. If you decide not to attend school or no longer wish to be considered for funding, please notify the MNO as soon as possible so that your application can be withdrawn.

Withdrawing an application prior to receiving funding will not affect your eligibility for future MNO funding opportunities.

Recipients are required to notify the MNO if they change programs after receiving funding. If you transfer to another eligible program under the MNO Justice & Legal Education Bursary Program, your funding may not be affected. However, if you transfer to a program that is not eligible under the bursary program, your eligibility may be impacted. All program changes will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The MNO reserves the right to request additional information and determine whether any further action is required.

Funds will be distributed through electronic funds transfer (EFT).

Yes, you can receive funding from more than one of these programs at a time.

Funding levels are determined based on degree and/or program type and available program funding.
