About the Program

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is pleased to announce the launch of a new Virtual Health Care Program, made possible through funding capacity.

This program, which will be managed by the Healing and Wellness Branch, is designed to provide Métis Citizens (verified) with easy access to supplemental health care while alleviating wait-times for medical consultations.

Program Details

  • Application Process: Applications can be submitted by each Citizen in need of health consultation services. Approved Citizens will receive a link allowing them to connect with a Physician Assistant.
  • Scheduling: Appointment date and times will be at the coordination of the Citizen and Physician Assistant’s schedules, booking through a third-party administrative service.
  • Follow ups: Any recommended treatments and/or follow up appointments are at the discretion of the Physician Assistant and Citizen.

This program aims to provide a simplified process to accessing medical health services, ensuring that MNO Citizens can receive the care they need.

Accessing the Service

  • Complete and submit application process
  • Expected timeline: Please allow 48 business hours for application processing
  • Citizen must have access to an Internet connection and connected device to be able to attend appointment
  • Desktop devices must use Google Chrome or Firefox browsers – Mobile requires Android, Safari or iOS

General Consultation Supports

  • Non-emergency medical inquiries
  • ePrescription Renewals
  • Treatment for minor illness and infections
  • Mental Health referrals
  • Referrals for specialists or labs
  • Any inquiries that would normally be brought to a family doctor or General Practitioner

This program will NOT:

  • Provide access to controlled medications such as narcotics
  • Provide mental health diagnosis
  • Assist with any work release or medical forms including WSIB, disability, or long-term absence. This includes past illnesses or anything longer than one week of absence.

Physician Assistants (PAs) are healthcare professionals who work in collaboration withphysicians and other healthcare providers to deliver patient care.

Rooted in the concept of team-based care, PAs work under the supervision of licensed physicians, but they possess the autonomy to perform a wide range of clinical tasks and procedures.

PAs are dedicated to providing patient-centered care that is respectful of each individual’s cultural background, beliefs, and preferences.

PAs have the authority to order labs and referrals, such as blood tests, imaging (x-rays, CT scan,MRI, ultrasound, etc.) and other diagnostic procedures, which aids in the timely diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed physician, PAs are authorized to prescribe medications to patients which includes filling ePrescriptions for non-controlled substances.

This includes both ongoing prescriptions for chronic conditions and short-term medications for acute illnesses.

 

This service is intended to alleviate wait times in Hospital Emergency rooms, reduce capacity at Urgent Care clinics for minor ailments and provide medical diagnosis and treatment plans for those who are unable to connect with a General Practitioner in a time befitting their need.

You will not be excluded from this service if you have a family physician, however, this service is intended to be used for those who are unable to access support in a timely manner or who do not have access to primary care.

Notes and results of an appointment with a PA will NOT be shared with your family doctor unless you, as the patient, request that it be shared.

This service is NOT intended for emergency medical situations. You are advised to contact 911 if you are experiencing a medical emergency.

This consultation service is being offered by the MNO at no cost to Verified Métis Citizens.

Citizens are responsible for any costs following their consultation including any recommended or prescribed medications, medical testing or specialist appointments that are not covered under their medical insurance or OHIP and any further expenses associated with their recommended treatment plan.

This service is intended for use by Verified Métis Citizen only. The applicant needs to be a Verified Métis Citizen. The applicant will be the person attending the appointment with the Physician Assistant.

Yes, the applicant must be the child, under the age of 16, with the Parent/Guardian section of the application completed.

The appointment will be made only for the child, to discuss the child’s medical inquiries alone.

No, once your personal link is received for your virtual consultations, this link is valid as long as the service is being provided. The same link is to be used for any follow up or new appointments with the Physician Assistant.

You will need to open the link and fill in the necessary information prior to each requested appointment in order to receive a new access code for each appointment. This same link is used to enter your access code to attend your scheduled appointment.

The PA can issue Physician’s notes requested by the schools or employers for temporary time (no longer than one week) missed due to a minor illness.

The PA will NOT issue notes for extended Leaves of Absence, school absence forms, or complete any forms pertaining to WSIB, disability or similar. They will also not issue any back-dated sick notes.

The PA can send your prescription to your preferred pharmacy to be filled.

Please provide OHIP information if available.

This will help you in moving forward if you require another service that is covered by OHIP, as well as, for data collection from a regulated platform, data which could help the MNO build on this service for its Citizens.

You can still access this platform without a valid OHIP card, you will just omit this information when filling out the requested information.

Once your information is received, a patient care coordinator will reach out via your preferred contact method to book your appointment with you.

Their operating hours are 7:30am –11:30pm, therefore the time of day you send off your information will factor as to when they get back to you.

After your appointment is booked, you will be issued an access code to attend the appointment online.
