Métis Nation of Ontario Housing & Homelessness Action Plan

Safe, secure, and culturally appropriate housing is essential for the well-being of Métis individuals, families, and communities. The MNO Housing & Homelessness Action Plan outlines our commitment to addressing housing challenges, preventing homelessness, and ensuring Métis citizens have access to sustainable and supportive housing solutions.

Developed through engagement with Métis communities across Ontario and informed by research by the Housing and Infrastructure Branch, this Action Plan provides a roadmap for improving housing stability, expanding supports, and advocating for policies that reflect the unique needs of Métis people in Ontario.

Métis Historical Housing Research

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO), in collaboration with Know History, is conducting an in-depth archival research project to explore the historical housing patterns of Métis families in Ontario. This research will analyze Canadian census records (1850s–1930s) and other archival materials to uncover how Métis housing, land ownership, and living conditions evolved over time.

Key research questions focus on historical land ownership, housing types, socio-economic influences, government policies, and infrastructure development. Findings will be compiled in a detailed report, supplemented with maps and graphics, and stored in an Airtable database for future reference.

This project aims to provide valuable insights into Métis housing history, informing culturally relevant and sustainable housing solutions for the future.

Deliverables:

  • A comprehensive report with maps/graphics illustrating findings.
  • A structured Airtable database of all research materials for the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO).

This project aims to preserve Métis housing history while providing valuable insights for addressing contemporary housing challenges.

Housing and Health Study

Starting in the spring of 2022 through the winter of 2023, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO)-led housing and health study examined the effects of housing conditions on the mental, physical, and holistic health of Métis citizens living in Ontario.

Over 4,100 MNO citizens contributed to this project through an online survey. In addition, 36 citizens took part in focus groups where they shared their thoughts, feelings and opinions about housing and health.

Youth Homelessness

Are you currently (or ever have been) homeless and are between 16-29 years of age and a citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario?

This is your chance to share your story to shape our housing programs to better support other Métis youth in similar situations. As part of a Métis driven and run research project in collaboration with the University of Toronto, we are investigating youth homelessness among MNO citizens to shape our current programs and meet the needs of the youth utilizing them.
